Representatives of variety of federal agencies spoke in a news conference to discuss the federal government’s efforts to aid victims of flooding in the Midwest. After weeks of rain, the Mississippi river approached record flood levels, affecting farms and homes near the river from Minnesota to Missouri. The speakers in the news conference discussed immediate relief efforts and long term relief programs for the ailing farmers and homeowners. The speaker also responded to questions from the assembled press. President Clinton previously visited flooded areas in Iowa and declared the area a federal disaster area. close
