Author and law professor Rebecca Zietlow looked at the life and work of James Mitchell Ashley, an abolitionist and Republican congressman from Ohio during the Civil War and early Reconstruction period. She talked about the influences that shaped his views against slavery as a young man and described his role as one of the leading proponents of the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery and involuntary servitude. This talk was part of a symposium hosted by the U.S. Capitol Historical Society. close
