Former U.S. Marine Corps historian and archivist Michael Miller discussed Harry Truman’s views of the U.S. Marine Corps, which he argued were first formed during his service as an Army artillery captain in World War I. He also discussed the history of rivalries between the military branches. The National Security Act of 1947 reorganized military forces in the United States and an early version of the act favored by President Truman threatened the existence of the Marine Corps. The MacArthur Memorial hosted this event as part of a day-long symposium on the World War I experiences of World War II leaders. close
