Matthew Gilmore, who edits a Washington, D.C., history blog, talked about the complicated and controversial building of a memorial to President James Garfield on the U.S. Capitol grounds. Mr. Garfield was shot in July 1881 by a disgruntled office seeker and died from his wounds the following September. The United States Capitol Historical Society hosted this event. close
