Telephone lines and social media were open for viewer comments on the unemployment rate, which dropped to an 18-year low of 3.8 percent in May, the lowest rate in the United States since 1969. President Donald Trump hinted in a tweet an hour before the the Department of Labor released the May unemployment report that the numbers were strong, a breach of years of presidential protocol that raised insider trader concerns among legal experts, and some economists claimed his announcement was a misuse of presidential power.

Bloomberg economy reporter Katia Dmitrieva spoke by phone about the May 2018 jobs report. close
