In 1998, the Academy Award-winning World War II film Saving Private Ryan was released in theaters. The movie portrays the 1944 D-Day invasion of Normandy, France and a mission to find a soldier behind enemy lines. Historians explored the accuracy of the opening Omaha Beach landing scene and they then discussed the historical accuracy of the film in general. The event was part of a symposium held at the National World War II Museum to mark the 20th anniversary of the film’s release. close
