The Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee held a meeting on the 2018 farm bill. The legislation is crafted and passed approximately every five years and covers programs that include nutritional food access for low-income families, crop insurance, rural development, food exports, and conservation. Included in the 2018 legislation is a bipartisan measure to legalize industrial hemp as an agricultural commodity. It also extends the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) (formerly known as "food stamps") and renews safety-net programs for farmers. close
