George Mason University Professor Rosemarie Zagarri looked at the role of women during America’s founding era. She talked about how prior to the Revolution women had either no or very limited political and legal rights. She argued that because Patriot leaders needed a wide base of support for the Revolution, they actively recruited women to participate, giving women experience participating in politics and providing a basis for demanding more rights in the future. The James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation hosted this event. close
