Russians colonized Alaska in 1741 to utilize the region’s natural resources. The United States purchased the land from Russia 126 years later. Alaska State Museum’s Curator of Collections Steven Henrikson explained the period of colonization and how it impacted Alaskan Natives, who had been living off the land and its resources for centuries prior.

C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made stops in their “2018 LCV Cities Tour” in Juneau, Fairbanks, and Anchorage, Alaska, from June 17-28, to feature the history and literary life of the communities. Working with the GCI cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. The history segments air on American History TV (AHTV) on C-SPAN3 and the literary events/non-fiction author segments air on Book TV on C-SPAN2. close
