Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY) criticized President Trump’s nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy. Senator Schumer said he believes the nominee would endanger women’s reproductive rights, harm health care coverage for people with pre-existing conditions, and weaken the Affordable Care Act. Senator Schumer also criticized Judge Kavanaugh’s writings and demanded a review of all of the nominee’s papers and emails.

Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) praised the nomination, saying Judge Kavanaugh is extremely well-qualified and one of the most influential judges in the country. Senator Hatch also noted that Judge Kavanaugh had written majority and dissenting opinions that were subsequently adopted by the Supreme Court. close
