A Senate Finance subcommittee examined the issue of paid family leave that allows workers time off for maternity or paternity leave, or to care for a sick family member. Members heard from policy analysts, and Senators Joni Ernst (R-IA) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), who talked about their separate legislative proposals. They discussed provisions in the legislation involving an increase in payroll taxes to fund about three months of paid leave and another proposal that would allow workers to receive paid leave in the form of early Social Security benefits. close
