The House Natural Resources Committee examined Puerto Rico’s electrical system and the reported management failures of the commonwealth’s sole energy utility. Among those appearing at the hearing were federal representatives from the U.S. and Puerto Rico involved in recovery efforts following the 2017 hurricanes that struck the island. Some of the issues discussed were privatization or federalization of the utility, establishment of an independent regulator, renewable energy options, and de-politicalization of the utility.
