In his weekly briefing, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) said he does not support the impeachment resolution introduced by Freedom Caucus lawmakers against Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. He said while it is important for Congress to exercise its oversight of the executive branch, Mr. Rosenstein’s response to congressional requests for documents did not rise to the level of “high crimes and misdemeanors” that would warrant impeachment. He also said impeachment proceedings would tie up the legislative process and could delay the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. Speaker Ryan was also asked about the bid by Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH) for speaker should Republicans retain majority control after the November elections. “I support Kevin McCarthy, everybody knows that,” said the speaker, referring to the House majority leader who had announced his intention to run for the top position in the 116th Congress. close
