The American Enterprise Institute hosted a discussion on U.S. policy in Southeast Asia. Assistant Defense Secretary for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs Randall Schriver spoke about military and diplomatic objectives in the Indo-Pacific region. He said that the U.S. would seek to cooperate with China when there are mutual interests but would not hesitate to confront the country when it challenged free and open concepts. In particular, he called China’s militarization efforts in the South China Sea “problematic” and said that it goes against a pledge President Xi Jinping made in 2015 at the White House with President Obama. Mr. Schriver also talked about the suspension of some U.S. military exercises on the Korean Peninsula and said that what happens in the future will largely depend on the behavior of North Korea. Following Mr. Schriver’s remarks, a panel of experts continued the discussion on Southeast Asia and took questions from the audience. close
