Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan was among the State Department officials who spoke at a ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of the bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. The former U.S. ambassador to Kenya and the chargé d’affaires in the U.S. embassy in Tanzania, who were both present at the time of the bombings on August 7, 1998, also delivered remarks at the event. The attacks, which killed more than 200 people, were the first major offensive against the U.S. from the al-Qaeda terror group. close
