The U.N. Security Council held a meeting, at the request of the U.S., on the latest efforts to denuclearize the Korean peninsula. Rosemary DiCarlo, U.N. undersecretary-general for political affairs, first delivered remarks on those efforts. While she said some progress had been reported by North Korea in its dismantling its nuclear program, the country was still unwilling to allow U.N. monitors to verify any of its claims. In this portion of the Security Council meeting, Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N., also called out Russia for what she said were violations of U.N.-backed sanctions against North Korea. She said the U.S. had evidence Russia had helped facilitate more than 140 deliveries of oil and gas products to North Korea in the past year. Russia’s ambassador brushed off the claim, saying the U.S. was upset North Korea was continuing forward with its direct dialogue with South Korean leaders. close
