The Supreme Court heard oral argument in Garza v. Idaho, a case concerning the appeal rights of defendants after entering a plea agreement. In Idaho in 2015 Gilberto Garza agreed to two plea deals. He later told his lawyer to file an appeal. The lawyer refused due to a limited waiver of rights to appeal that under the agreements and arguing that filing one would be ineffective. Mr. Garza filed suit. The Supreme Court was to resolve whether a defendant’s right to appeal is fully relinquished when taking plea agreements with these waivers. close
