Executives from Amazon, Apple, AT&T, Google, Twitter, and Charter Communications testified on data privacy before the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee. The committee was considering drafting legislation that seeks to address consumer data privacy while balancing compliance costs for businesses. The hearing was spurred by data privacy laws passed in California and the European Union which had caused concern among businesses and stakeholders that they might soon be dealing with a legislative patchwork absent comprehensive federal legislation from Congress. After the hearing, Chair John Thune (R-SD) took questions from reporters. close
