The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee held a hearing on implementing positive train control (PTC) technology, which is designed to automatically stop a train before certain accidents could occur. Congress set a statutory deadline of December 31, 2018, for railroads to implement this technology; however, railroads can apply for a two-year extension if they meet certain criteria. Witnesses testifying included officials from Amtrak, the Federal Railroad Administration, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) and New Jersey Transit. close
