The National Space Council met at the National Defense University in Washington, DC, to discuss efforts to establish a U.S. Space Force, which would become the sixth branch of the armed forces and would serve as a dedicated force for protecting the country’s civil, commercial and military interests in space. Vice President Mike Pence, who chairs the National Space Council, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine and Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao were among those who participated in the meeting. The vice president said they were aiming for the new military branch to launch by 2020 and that the White House would include funding for it in the next budget proposal. close
