The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals heard oral argument in State of California v. Little Sisters of the Poor, a case concerning the Affordable Care Act’s contraceptive coverage mandate. California was challenging a 2017 Trump-administration federal regulation expanding exemptions to nonprofits such as Little Sisters of the Poor from providing contraceptive insurance coverage to its employees due to religious beliefs and objections. Shortly after the regulation was issued, California was one of several states that successfully filed suit to block it in federal district court, and a nationwide injunction was issued. close
