Matthew Costello reached back to 1790s politics to explain George Washington’s vision for the capital city later named for him. Washington’s influence extended not only to the city’s design, but also to the building of the White House and U.S. Capitol. Mr. Costello is the senior historian at the White House Historical Association. His talk was part of a conference co-hosted by the U.S. Capitol Historical Society that highlighted the work of William Thornton, who is known as the Capitol’s first architect. close
