Titled “The Spirit of Apollo,” this ceremony from Washington National Cathedral commemorated the 50th anniversary of Apollo 8. On December 24, 1968, as they became the first humans to orbit the moon, Apollo 8 astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders took turns reading passages from the book of Genesis to millions of listeners on earth. This commemoration included a choral performance with audio from the Christmas Eve broadcast, recollections from Apollo 8 astronaut James Lovell, remarks by the NASA administrator and the director of the National Air and Space Museum, and reflections by two religious leaders. close
