The Senate voted to limit debate on a criminal justice reform bill, the First Step (Formerly Incarcerated Reenter Society Transformed Safely Transitioning Every Person) Act. The bill reduces mandatory minimum sentences for many felonies and makes more federal prisoners eligible for early release.

Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS) was sworn in by Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT), the president pro tempore of the Senate. Senator Hyde-Smith won the November 27 runoff election to complete the late Senator Thad Cochran’s (R) term, which ends in January 2021. close
