President Trump Participates in School Safety Roundtable

President Trump and members of the Federal Commission on School Safety unveiled the commission’s report on improving school safety. The commission was created by the president in March 2018 following the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The president and members of the commission were joined at the White House by survivors and relatives of victims of school shootings as well as education and law enforcement stakeholders. Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker spoke about the Justice Department’s new rule clarifying that bump stocks are considered machine guns and are therefore prohibited by federal law. At the end of the roundtable, the president was asked about the possibility of a partial government shutdown amid spending talks with congressional leaders. “We’ll see what happens. It’s too early to say,” said the president. “We need border security.” close
