The House Financial Services Committee held a hearing on the national debt, which totaled more than $21 trillion at the end of 2018. Fiscal policy analysts from a variety of think tanks talked about expected growth in the U.S. national debt after 2018 and the potential effects on the economy as a whole. Representative Jeb Hensarling (R-TX), the panel’s outgoing chair, also delivered remarks praising the incoming chair, Representative Maxine Waters (D-CA). close
