On the first day of the 116th Congress, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was joined by fellow House Democratic leaders for a press conference on federal spending amid a partial government shutdown. The new speaker rejected President Trump’s demand for the funding of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. “We’re not doing a wall,” she said, calling it “an immorality” and “an old way of thinking.” Speaker Pelosi said the House would vote on the same appropriations packages passed out of Senate committees in the previous Congress and would extend homeland security funding through February 8 using a continuing resolution. Doing so, she said, would give them more time to negotiate a longer-term spending solution with the White House. close
