Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) began by talking about U.S. support for Israel, the Syrian Civil War, and Russian and Iranian influence in the region. He said similar legislation had bipartisan support in the past, but now Democrats “want to block the Senate from even considering” the bill. He said the reason was “Democrats total unwillingness to negotiate with the White House over border security.” He also said Democrats “got the government shutdown for two weeks, now they want to shutdown the Senate,” and that until there’s a bill the president will support, he won’t “waste floor time on show votes.” close
