The Supreme Court heard oral argument in two consolidated cases, American Legion v. American Humanist Association and Maryland-National Capital Park v. American Humanist Association, which concern Maryland’s WWI memorial in the form of a cross located on public land in Bladensburg. The land and the cross were bought in 1961 by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, a bi-county agency of Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties. Several residents complained that the government was affiliating itself with Christianity, and they and the American Humanist Association, which advocates for the separation of church and state, filed suit, arguing that the cross violates the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause, which prohibits Congress from establishing an official religion or promoting religious practices. close
