Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) opened the Senate with remarks on President Trump’s previous-night national address and border security. He called day 19 of a government shutdown over the president’s demand for a U.S.-Mexico border ball the “Democrats' latest experiment in absentee negotiation.” He went on to talk about drugs, criminals, and gang members crossing the border and said the president’s proposals are “eminently reasonable.” He said that before the Trump presidency, Democrats supported similar proposals. He also spoke about the Middle East policy bill that Democrats blocked the day before. close
