On Day 24 of the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) came to the Senate floor to call for an end to the shutdown and reiterate that the spending bills being passed by the House are the same pieces of legislation approved by the Senate in the previous Congress. He once again urged President Trump and Senate Republicans to re-open the government and then begin negotiations on border security. He was followed by Senate Appropriations Vice Chair Patrick Leahy (D-VT), who discussed the government shutdown’s impact on federal workers and why Democrats are continuing to block legislation that does not re-open the government. close
