Civil War scholar Patrick Hickey presented a program titled, “The Devil vs. the Hummingbird: The Midnight Confrontation on Capitol Hill that Determined the Fate of a Presidency and Ensured the Survival of Constitutional Government.” Mr. Hickey’s illustrated talk featured controversial Civil War General Daniel Sickles (The Devil), and 21 year-old sculptor Vinnie Ream (The Hummingbird), and described how the two were involved in the political fight over the 1868 impeachment of President Andrew Johnson. Vinnie Ream sculpted the statue of President Lincoln that stands in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. This was a Lincoln Group of the District of Columbia program. close
