Commissioners on the National Commission on Military, National, and Public Service (NCMNPS) outlined the interim findings of their report on the Selective Service System. The Selective Service, an independent government agency, maintains information on those eligible to serve in the military, as well as barriers to national and public service. The commissioners noted the low number of Americans willing and able to serve in the military, with less than one percent of the nation’s population doing so and 70 percent of Americans not qualified to serve.

In 2017, Congress created NCMNPS to review the selective service system and whether women should be required to register as all 18-25 year old males are required to do so. They also are charged with suggesting ways to create a universal expectation of national military, national or public service. close
