Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke at a U.N. Security Council meeting on the political situation in Venezuela, where National Assembly President Juan Guaidó had declared himself the nation’s acting president. Mr. Guaidó's declaration threatened to depose Nicolas Maduro, whose reelection was questioned by observers but whose continued presidency was being supported by a coalition of nations including Russia, Mexico, China and Uruguay. Mr. Guaidó's government, meanwhile, was being supported by the U.S. and a number of Latin American and European nations. Mr. Maduro’s foreign affairs minister spoke on behalf of his administration, accusing the U.S. of continuing what he called a string of unprovoked interventions in Latin American politics. Secretary Pompeo had offered a resolution for the Security Council to consider regarding recognition of Mr. Guaidó's government, but it was withdrawn without a vote before the end of the meeting. close
