Two former Federal Communications Commission chairs, Tom Wheeler (D) and Michael Powell (R), testified at a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee on revising the FCC’s 2017 repeal of the Obama-administration’s open internet rules, also known as net neutrality. The decision changed how internet service providers (ISPs) control information flows across the internet. Other witnesses included Mozilla’s chief operating officer, Eastern Oregon Telecom’s CEO, and several open internet advocates. Others topics addressed included rural broadband access, 5G wireless technology and Title II of the Communications Act of 1934, the legal foundation used to enact rules for ISPs concerning net neutrality. close
