The State Department’s Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad discussed the country’s ongoing peace efforts at the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington, DC. Mr. Khalizad, who previously served as U.S. ambassador to the U.N., Afghanistan and Iraq, said a framework agreement had been reached with the Taliban but there was still more work to be done to advance the peace process. He added that the U.S. was not looking to monopolize the peace process, and said he was in favor of other countries like Russia participating in the discussions as long as they had constructive ideas. Following his remarks, he answered questions from the audience. Former National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley moderated this event. close
