The subcommittee heard testimony from Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan on U.S. monetary policy. In his testimony, Mr. Greenspan called for Congress to control the federal deficit or face higher short-term interest rates to prevent inflation. Higher short-term interest rates would follow a rise in longer-term interest rates, which would bode ill for the U.S. economy. He also criticized initiatives to defeat the Clinton administration’s deficit reduction plan, saying the economy could survive the effects of the higher taxes and spending cuts. close
