Darnella Davis talked about former African slaves of the Cherokee Nation known as Cherokee Freedmen. She explained how the Indians were forced to absorb the freedmen after the Civil War, were forcibly removed from the South to Indian Territory in the West, and the legal actions concerning citizenship rights for the descendants of the enslaved people. Ms. Davis is the author of “Untangling a Red, White, and Black Heritage: A Personal History of the Allotment Era.” This interview was recorded at an authors event hosted by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. close
