The Supreme Court heard oral argument in United States v. Davis. The case concerns whether using a weapon while committing a crime is a “crime of violence” requiring a harsher penalty. The plaintiffs, Maurice Davis and Andre Glover were both convicted under this definition for a series of June 2014 armed robberies in the Dallas-area. They argued their convictions should be overturned because this definition is unconstitutionally vague. The federal government’s lawyer, during oral argument, warned of several negative consequences should the justices rule in favor of these two men. He said the convictions of “hundreds and thousands of very violent offenders” could be reviewed and prison sentences be impacted. close
