Politico hosted a series of policy conversations with governors from around the country who were in Washington, D.C., for the annual National Governors Association winter meeting. This portion featured discussions with Governors Matt Bevin (R-KY), Gary Herbert (R-UT), Jared Polis (D-CO) and Kristi Noem (R-SD). They discussed issues and challenges being addressed in their states, including competing budget priorities, health care and Medicaid programs, marijuana and hemp farming and regulations, and the impact of the 35-day partial federal government shutdown which lasted from December 2018 into January 2019. Governor Polis (D-CO) also addressed the lawsuit brought by 16 states, including his own state, against the Trump administration for his national emergency declaration at the U.S.-Mexico border. Governor Polis said the potential reallocation of funds could divert needed money away from military bases and construction projects in his state. close
