The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations held a hearing to examine the impact of the Chinese government on the U.S. education system. Witnesses from the State and Education Departments testified on Chinese government investments in more than 100 Confucius Institutes located on campuses across the U.S., which promote Chinese language and culture abroad, but have been criticized for not adhering to western principles of academic freedom. Lawmakers from both parties called for more transparency and further investigations into the Chinese learning centers. close
