Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Kevin McAleenan testified at a hearing on human smuggling at the U.S.-Mexico border. One day earlier, in a briefing on migration trends, Mr. McAleenan announced CBP had in February apprehended more than 76,000 migrants as they crossed the southern border, a record number he said was putting an added strain on the agency and border patrol agents. He added many of the arrivals come from the Central American “Northern Triangle” nations of Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. Other topics included reports of sexual assault and physical abuse of migrants, providing medical care to families crossing the border, processing asylum seeker claims, and President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency.
