Members of New Zealand’s Parliament debated legislation banning most semi-automatic weapons following the March 15, 2019, terrorist mosque attacks in Christchurch, New Zealand. Police Minister Stuart Nash introduced the amendment to the bill, telling members that owning a firearm is “a privilege and not a right” in New Zealand, and that law-abiding hunters and farmers would not be affected by the change. One member spoke out about any moves to slow down the process and referenced the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the U.S. approach to gun laws. A portion of this event was spoken in Maori, a native language, and New Zealand’s second official language. close
