Attorney General William Barr testified before a Senate Appropriations subcommittee on the Justice Department’s fiscal year 2020 budget request. Like a similar previous-day House Appropriations subcommittee hearing, many lawmakers' questions were on the pending release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, and Mr. Barr reiterated his guidelines for redacting the document before its public distribution. He was also asked about Justice Department programs aimed at enforcing violence against women and his department’s decision to not defend parts of the Affordable Care Act in federal court cases. He was also asked to clarify the federal government’s role in enforcing drug laws in states that had legalized medical and recreational marijuana. close
