During World War II, the U.S. Marine Corps recruited Navajo Indians to help the military secretly communicate their operational plans. In a series of interviews, Navajo Code Talker Albert Smith talked about witnessing Japanese soldiers' suicides, his decision to stay silent about his war experience, and his religious customs. Conducted between 2004 and 2006, the interviews took place at Mr. Smith’s home in New Mexico and on the islands where he served during the war. close
