During World War II, the U.S. Marine Corps recruited Navajo Indians to help the military secretly communicate their operational plans. In a series of interviews, Navajo Code Talker Samuel Tso talked about his early life and World War II service. Conducted between 2004 and 2006, the interviews took place at Mr. Tso’s home on the Navajo Nation tribal lands in Arizona, and on the Pacific Islands where he served during the war. Mr. Tso reflected on growing up in poverty, an anonymous gift he received while serving overseas, and the impact of returning to the battlefields with his children 60 years later. close
