University of California, Irvine English Professor Brook Thomas delivered a talk titled, “The Politics of Popular Portrayals of Andrew Johnson’s Impeachment.” Professor Thomas discussed three examples: Thomas Dixon, Jr.'s 1905 novel The Clansman; the 1942 Hollywood film Tennessee Johnson; and the impeachment story as told by Senator John F. Kennedy in his 1957 Pulitzer Prize winning book Profiles in Courage.
