Located in Reno, Nevada, the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony (RSIC) formed a federally recognized government in 1936 under the Indian Reorganization Act. The RSIC is a Sovereign Nation and Its members are from three Great Basin Tribes - the Paiute, the Shoshone and the Washoe - and maintain an urban status. Chair Arlan Melendez provided insight into the tribe’s economy, its relationship with the federal government and the importance of quality health care for Native people.

C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2019 LCV Cities Tour” in Reno, Nevada, from April 6-12, 2019, to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Charter cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. The history segments air on American History TV (AHTV) on C-SPAN3 and the literary events/non-fiction author segments air on Book TV on C-SPAN2. close
