Mary Louise Roberts, author of D-Day Through French Eyes: Normandy 1944, talked about the 75th anniversary on June 6, 2019 of the World War II D-Day invasion of Normandy, France. On that day in 1944, 160,000 Allied troops attacked along a 50-mile stretch of coastline defended by German forces. Despite suffering more than 9,000 casualties, by day’s end the Allies had gained a foothold on French soil. Professor Roberts spoke by remote video link from Madison, Wisconsin. The program began with a 1945 film clip from the U.S. Office of War and Information of a French civilian describing the liberation of Paris. close
