In a rare appearance, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) testified before a joint hearing of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC) and the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission (TLHRC) to discuss the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests in China. Speaker Pelosi talked about the legislation she co-sponsored days after the protests that would grant asylum in the U.S. to Chinese citizens. Following her testimony, a panel of former Chinese student leaders and experts testified about China’s human rights abuses, including imprisonment of activists and censorship of free speech. One of the 1989 student leaders, Wu’er Kaixi, called the Chinese government “a group of bandits” and said he had felt at times “betrayed” by the U.S. government on this issue. close
